We don’t believe in leaving you to train online or through VR, and we never double or triple up your training with other trainees either. That’s why we only offer one to one, personalised, in-car training. After all, this is where you’ll be working and where you’ll be assessed for your qualifying exams. It works! Steps to Becoming a Driving Instructor
Firstly you need to make sure you meet the required criteria set out by the DVSA.
Once you’ve checked you qualify, you can apply to be on the Driving Instructor register. This will start the process to beginning your new carer and It’s free to apply. You’ll then be asked to complete your DBS, you can also do this here. This service costs £8.22.
Officially you don’t need to have a trainer. But, it is extremely unlikely that you will succeed without one. The Driving Genie not only understands what it takes, and how to get you there, but our personal touch will ensure that you feel supported throughout the whole process and beyond.
Time to study for and sit your 3 qualifying tests...
Theory test
You’ll have 90 minutes to answer 100 multiple-choice questions. These will be split into 4 sections covering;
In order to pass, you will need to have achieved an overall score of 85/100 and have at least 20/25 in each category.
Hazard Perception
The hazard perception part of this exam will include watching 14 video clips that contain developing hazards. To gain a high score and pass the exam, you must identify the hazards as they are starting to develop. Here you will have to achieve at least 57 points out of 75. The part 2 test will last around an hour and will assess your driving ability, including manoeuvres. In order to teach others, you will need to be a skilled, alert, and safe driver. The Driving Genie will provide you with all the necessary training to help you sharpen your driving skills to the required standard. While the DVSA allows only three attempts at this test, there’s no need to worry. We’ll make sure you’re equipped with all the tools and knowledge you need before you take it, giving you the best chance of success! You can find more information here.
This is the final part of your training journey to becoming a qualified driving instructor. You'll need to complete 40 hours of training to develop the skills required to pass your Part 3 ADI test. After your training, you can either apply for a trainee license or decide to sit your final exam. At The Driving Genie, we highly recommend the trainee license route. This not only gives you the opportunity to practice what you've learned during your training, through conducting real lessons, but you can earn an income whilst doing so. Therefore equipping you with the hands-on experience needed to confidently pass your final exam.
